Secretly, the Auvergnat would really like a small resumption of activity somewhere in the Chain to complete this fantastic landscape. Let's admit that it would be unexpected for local volcanology. The analysis of eruptions provides many answers to questions about volcanic mechanisms. But, reasonably, local and national authorities would have to face an unprecedented situation.

The risks :

Right from the start, a sudden eruption can be ruled out. The seismic precursors of a magmatic uprising will be well captured by the national monitoring network. The signatures of such a phenomenon are known, and it will be possible to determine as accurately as possible, with the help of additional instrumentation, the perimeter of the exit point. The problem that specialists still need to solve is the estimation of the probable date of the eruption. From this will depend the options chosen by civil authorities who will need to take the necessary steps to promptly evacuate the area deemed dangerous. One can imagine the following scenarios:

- Strombolian: this is the most common model in the Chain. The risks could be very limited. In the long term, only the lava flows spreading toward the east would be worrying for the terraced Clermont habitat.

- Peléan: the effects of past episodes have been, it seems, very limited. But Peléan activity is unpredictable because pyroclastic flows can always develop and destroy the surrounding area.

- Phreatomagmatic: this is a very plausible scenario because the entire sector of the chain contains significant water reserves. Explosions of this type are generally large-scale with projections of blocks of considerable size.

In addition to eruptive manifestations, water source pollution by gases, the always possible gas emissions, and falling dust plumes in the surroundings are all effects to consider.

If this were the case, there is no doubt that an entire region would be disrupted. The displacement of a few thousand people, due to its social and economic impacts, would certainly pose a serious logistical problem.

It is interesting to see what would happen through observations reported by the media on such an important event. Here in a local newspaper is the kind of information one might find, in a context with limited consequences. It is assumed, of course, that the daily paper is printed somewhere other than Clermont Ferrand.

Volcanic activity

The last volcanoes went extinct 6,500 years ago (Pavin system). Since then, there have been no recognized manifestations. This period is too short to conclude that the chaîne des Puys is definitively dormant. The probability of a resumption of activity is not negligible. But where? Research does not allow this question to be answered immediately. We already have a good idea of the architecture of the magma reservoirs and their dynamics. Furthermore, certain hot springs of the various Auvergne spas as well as the continuous or sporadic emissions of mantle carbon dioxide are indicators of latent volcanic activity.

Cet épisode sismique, heureusement sans conséquence, fut un peu plus intense qu'à l'habitude.

Seismic activity

It is significant and essentially tectonic, related to the thrust of the Alps. Contained within low values, it is sometimes felt by the region's inhabitants. For example, the numerous events of August 2003, with a 3.6 MI magnitude tremor and epicenters extending from the Ancizes-Comps area to the Tazenat crater (Source RENASS). This seismic episode, fortunately without consequences, was a little more intense than usual.

La Chaîne des PuysOpposite is a photo simulating the western horizon of the Clermont Plain. The constant glow of craters throwing incandescent slag is a nocturnal spectacle that is always extraordinary and fascinating. The prehistoric people of the region surely observed these phenomena, without being able to give them any explanations.

In our time, an event of this type, due to its social and economic repercussions, would have a completely different scale, despite the scientific and tourist interest it would provide.
